Dear Mr. Perkins, USA, Retired:

In my nearly 22 years in Congress, I have never seen the tremendous level excitement that has been generated by the Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.  Because of the significant interest in attending Inaugural events, I would like to convey the following information which I hope will prove useful.

Official tickets to the Inaugural Ceremonies are provided free of charge.  All Members of the House of Representatives will receive 198 tickets to the swearing in.  All Senators will receive 393 tickets.  Since I have received ticket requests from more than 10,000 constituents, I can no longer process requests but will continue to communicate via email updates to all whom are interested in Inaugural events.  As I receive details about alternate viewing locations, bus parking, security measures, etc. I will be sure to pass them along to you.  Within in the next few weeks, I will send emails to update constituents on the status of their ticket request and detail my ticket distribution process.  Please Sign Up Here For Updates.  If you have already sent a ticket request, you will automatically receive these updates.

Unfortunately, our office has received reports of individuals or organizations claiming to offer Inauguration ceremony tickets to those willing to pay for them, often including travel and lodging costs in the fee. Constituents should be advised that no one claiming to have tickets, including those for sale, is actually in possession of tickets, as none have been distributed.  The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies distributes tickets directly to the Members of the 111th Congress in mid-January. 

If you are planning to travel to Washington D.C. during the time of the Inauguration, there are a few things to take into consideration. First, I suggest making travel arrangements as soon as possible, as most flights and hotels are already completely booked. Keep in mind that this event is historically cold and wet. The crowds will be very large and guests will likely be outside for at least four hours. Food and beverage, large bags (including diaper bags), and strollers are not permitted in ticketed areas.  Because of the dense crowds, mobility is likely to be a challenge.  Please take these challenges into consideration when planning your trip. 

Also, please be advised that my office does not distribute tickets for the Morning Worship Service, Procession to the Capitol, Inaugural Luncheon, Inaugural Parade, or Inaugural Balls.  The following committees should be contacted regarding these Inaugural events: 

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is responsible for all events at the U.S. Capitol, including the Oaths of Office (swearing in) for the President and Vice-President. 

The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) is responsible for all balls, galas, receptions, parties, and the official Inaugural Day Parade.  The members of PIC are appointed by President-elect Obama and the committee has not yet been established.  I will keep you up-to-date on PIC's decisions and contact information as they become available.

Though the parade is managed by PIC, requests to participate in the parade should be submitted to the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee.  The deadline was Tuesday, November 18th.  After all requests are collected, they are submitted to the Presidential Inaugural Committee for participant selection.

www.nateperkins.tv/ By Eric Stirgus The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday, November 13, 2008 Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin said Wednesday the citys employees will have their hours - and pay - cut by 10 percent each week to help the city weather an expected budget shortfall of $50 million to $60 million. The pay and hour cuts, which begin Dec. 1, affect 4,600 city employees. Franklin also announced an immediate hiring freeze for most city agencies and said the city will have to cut back some services, dip into its reserves for about $12 million and make other personnel moves.

Blaming the shortfall on the nations economic crisis, Franklin said the city needs a federal rescue plan in addition to its cuts to balance the budget. In a letter Tuesday to U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, she asked for federal investment in Atlantas - and other cities - infrastructure, public safety, and programs for job training and placement.

The future prosperity of this country is tied directly to our ability to provide basic services and quality infrastructure to our citizens, Franklin wrote. We are at serious risk in failing in that most basic public responsibility. And if current economic conditions continue, she told the City Councils Finance/Executive committee, This will not be the last time you see me before the end of the fiscal year. Although Franklin and her staff said they have not made decisions about how they will make the service cuts, some union leaders said the changes will erode morale and threaten public safety.

This is a dangerous time for our firefighters, Atlanta fire Lt. Jim Daws, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 134, told reporters. The city is putting them in a dangerous position. Atlanta police Sgt. Scott Kreher, president of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, Local 623, said some officers may get discouraged by the cuts and leave the force.

The citizens of Atlanta should be screaming at the top of their lungs, he said. But Franklin, pointing to data showing crime in Atlanta is down in most major categories this year, said Atlantans are going to have a safe city. Councilman Ceasar Mitchell proposed furloughs earlier this year. City leaders did not approve the idea. We are in a deep, wide recession. We are going to provide the best services we can with the resources we have, the mayor said.

Franklin and her staff based the projected shortfall on data showing revenues below projections for the first three months of the current budget year, which began July 1. Sales taxes, which represent about 20 percent of the citys revenue, are down by 3 percent. Building permit and licensing permit revenues are down 60 percent and 50 percent respectively.

Franklin said the citys expenses are 2 percent below budget. She said the citys Aviation Department, which manages Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, is holding up, but its Watershed Management Department is facing a projected budget shortfall of at least $50 million. City officials say the shortfall is caused largely by dropoffs in usage revenues and rising debt costs, and the mayor said Watershed Management officials are working on a plan to meet the gap.

Some city residents wondered Wednesday whether the cuts were being made too hastily. Paul Zucca of Grant Park noted the city last week hired a new chief financial officer and consultants to create a long-term plan to improve the citys Finance Department. I would feel more comfortable when the chief financial officer has more numbers, said Zucca, who served on a committee that recently came up with salary recommendations for the mayor, City Council and Atlanta Board of Education. Councilman Kwanza Hall, vice chairman of the councils finance committee, countered that the city had to move quickly. I appreciate [Franklins staff] doing it now instead of waiting until later, he said.

The city earlier this year laid off 372 employees, eliminated about 900 jobs, cut some services and raised fees to fill a $140 million budget gap for the current fiscal year. Atlanta had a $41 million budget deficit for the fiscal year that ended June 30. Nutter delivered the letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. The letter is signed by Nutter, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon. NATE PERKINS LIVE!

On the question puppy for his daughters, Obama quipped that it was a major decision that would need to meet two criteria. One was that it be hypo-allergenic.

"On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog," he said. "But obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts, like me. So the -- so, whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household."

On a serious note, Obama emphasized that he recognized the obstacles to getting the economy back on track, but said he planned several short-term actions to help.

He called the American auto builders "the backbone of the American manufacturing industry" and said "I would like to see the administration do everything it can to accelerate the retooling" of that industry to make more fuel-efficient cars. We Need a Good Whuppin -- November 2004

0 No doubt you have memories of your parents giving you what we called a whuppin. You probably thought they were mean and didnt love you, right? Your parents, on the other hand, probably felt terrible too, even though you deserved that whuppin they didnt want to see you hurt, and they surely didnt want to be the ones to inflict the pain. Its the same way today with us as adult Black people. Our elders, which I have officially joined, as of August 2004, love us and do not want to see us hurt, but they need to give us a good whuppin every now and then.

In my frustration, not only after the voting irregularities in the 2004 election, I pulled out a cassette tape I bought four years ago, right after that last presidential selection. It was recorded by an elder whom I love and highly respect. His name is Kwa David Whitaker, of Cleveland, Ohio. The presentation on the tape is titled, The Wake Up Call. I am telling you right now, you must get a copy of this brothers discourse.

Brother Whitaker recorded his insightful, enlightening, and prophetic words in November 2000. He expertly weaved the Gore/Bush election scenario into an easy-to-understand football analogy, explained what position Black folks are in vis-à-vis the U.S. political system, and told us how to win, despite the system being stacked against us. When I first heard it, I called Kwa David and thanked him for turning out such a fantastic piece of communication to our people. I then bought several copies of the tape and gave them to others.

No one loves Black people more than Kwa David, but I know hed rather whup us than to see someone else do it. So, how about another one, Bro? I dont believe there has ever been a time that Black people in this country have been so dysfunctional, so apathetic, so gullible, so afraid, so irresolute, so unconcerned, so lemming-like, and so willing to capitulate to the whims and desires of every other group, while turning our backs on the interests and needs of our own people.

In Cincinnati, I see black folks selling their souls to an inept, corrupt, and biased political administration. I see them acquiesce to greedy power-hungry corporate executives, denying Black people even the slightest opportunity for collective economic advancement.

I have seen it all in this city, and it is getting worse. We have ignorant, cowering, volunteer-slave blacks who have been chosen to do the bidding of the establishment, and they do it with the pride and aplomb of a Colin Powell, Armstrong Williams, or Condoleezza Rice.
